The ICM517A: Product Spotlight of the Month

This month’s product spotlight is none other than our Best-In-Class ICM517A Single-Phase Surge Protection Device.

In our recent blog post, The 3-Phase Combo You Didn’t Know You Needed, we discussed the need for Line Voltage Monitoring in tandem with Surge Protection Devices to protect our most expensive equipment, and furthermore, why we can’t have one without the other.

This recent article, however, was geared toward 3-phase equipment. Let’s take a deeper look into Single-Phase Surge Protection and what sets the ICM517A apart from other SPD’s in the industry.

What is Single Phase Surge Protection?

Single Phase Surge Protection Devices, or SPD’s, protect from transient power surges that occur over a short period of time, just as 3-Phase SPD’s do. To recap, below is a visual representation of a voltage surge in which an SPD would serve extremely useful:

A fast-acting transient voltage can spike at any time, and due to the electrical disturbance, may cause failure of electronic equipment that contains sensitive electronic controls. When properly protected, an SPD like the ICM517A will absorb the transient voltage spikes and/or surges (caused by lightning strikes or other fast-acting disturbances), and safely dissipate the energy in the form of heat by “sacrificing itself” instead of your most expensive equipment.

What makes the ICM517A Best-In-Class?

The ICM517A is a NEMA Type 4X enclosed Type 2 SPD, designed to protect valuable single-phase equipment by dissipating momentary voltage spikes and transient power surges.

The tried and true, preexisting industry favorite ICM517 SPD recently received an update, which prompted the designation of an “A” to the end of the preexisting part number. With 100,000’s of ICM517’s installed in the field, ICM stayed true to the rugged & reliable design of the existing “go to” SPD, the new ICM517A Type 2 Surge Protective Device is now constructed even more robustly.
